Different math. Confusion is an expensive affair.

HT Classifieds charges text classifieds per line. The price varies depending on the city edition you want, and one line is approximately 25-30 characters. Delhi is more expensive than Lucknow. That's expected. The thing that confuses people is that a blank line is considered to be a line. This is particularly true of obituary advertisements, people create blank spaces to read and they pay without even knowing it.

Display classifieds work differently. They are billed by the square centimetre. One ad with dimensions of 5x4cm is worth 20 sq cm. The price per sq cm depends on the position - general pages cost less than the front page or back page. Display can be justified in the case of an obituary or a property listing that requires design. Name change notice? It is hardly ever worth doing.

One of the things I have continued to remind clients: get the real rate card at the HT Media office or their booking portal that is approved before you place your bet. Rates shift quarterly. What they paid six months ago is not what you are going to pay today. I have even been forced to correct my own quotes during a conversation.

The Benefit of Combo Offers: HT + Hindi Hindustan + Mint

Three papers are operated by HT Media, which are Hindustan Times, Hindi Hindustan andMint. Making a combo offer of all three costs much less than making a separate booking.

This is where it comes in handy. When you have both English and Hindi readers (and this is the majority of the Delhi population), then a combo notice is convenient. You get to more people and incur less on a per-insertion basis.

Mint combos are more niche. Good when you are placing a financial recruitment ad or something that the Mint readers would have interest in. Mint does not add much in the case of matrimonial or obituary advertisements. You don't have to pay to reach where you are not needed.

The combo discount may be 15 percent to 30 percent depending on the length of time and the type of advert. The offer in hand is confirmed upon booking. They are not necessarily advertised on the front line, you need to inquire.

Seasonal Discounts: When to Book for the Best Price

The rate cards do not vary on a daily basis, but demand does - and inventory of ad space is scarce.

The months of January-March are usually competitive. Property listings spike. Matrimonial season is active. When you are making a booking within this period, bargain early or pay the normal rate.

April-June is less busy. Certain booking partners provide minor discounts or priority reservation at this time. I have witnessed customers receiving 10-12 percent off retail just because the stock was available and they requested it.

Do not do the week prior to and after big festivals. Diwali, Holi, Eid - HT classifieds pages fill quickly, rates increase informally (not on the card but in practice) and position is less flexible.

In the case of obituary advertisements timing is not necessarily at your beck and call. However, when you are placing an order that is scheduled, such as a remembrance notice, anniversary of a death, the mid-week placements on Tuesday or Wednesday would be cheaper than the Sunday edition. Readership on Sundays is more, and that is the case with HT prices.

Online vs. Agent Booking: Comparing the Costs

When you reserve HT classifieds online via official websites such as releaseMyAd or HT classified section, you will have transparent prices. You check out what you are paying before you verify. No middleman margin. The UI allows you to view the ad prior to being sent to the printers, which is not always the case with agents.

Agents - authorized agents add value in case the booking is complicated. Various city

editions, page positioning, confirmed combo packages in HT + Hindi Hindustan + Mint. A good agent will get through that faster than you would do yourself. They also internalize mistakes. When something comes out wrong, they pursue the correction.

Price: online tends to be 8-15 percent cheaper on simple, one-time bookings of books. Agents make a margin and you are paying this margin whether you can see it or not. One time obituary advertisement in a given city - go online. On a 10 city matrimonial campaign, which will take four weeks - hire an agent.

One warning: do not make the reservation with unverified aggregators that you have located through a Google advertisement. Ensure that they have been registered as authorised representatives by HT Media. I have had clients pay and receive a confirmation receipt, but not have anything printed.

Conclusion: Getting the Best ROI for Your Advertisement

ROI on classified is not a complex thing to calculate after you have filtered the noise.

The cheapest rate is to be aware of the rate card when you are making the booking, inquiring about any combo offers when they are not offered on the web, timing your insertion to prevent high demand periods and making an online booking when going to make the simple placements. Text works better than paying to be displayed. Keep off cities that are not of benefit to your audience. Negotiating space is lost by waiting until the last day.

The today sections of HT epaper can be searched and handy in case you wish to see how your competitors are designing their advertisements before you decide on a design. You should be worth five minutes of your time before you write your own copy.

The newspaper trade is not attempting to deceive you. However, it also will not offer the less expensive alternative. That part is on you.

FAQs: HT Classifieds Rates & Savings

        <details class="faq-item">

1.
